私は1999年に東京大学を卒業後、国内で一般外科と心臓外科の研修を積みました。研修医1年目のときに東大の先生方のご指導のもと高安病頸動脈瘤の手術症例をまとめて、英文論文を発表することができました。それ以来、自分たちの手術が患者さんや世の中に役立っているのか検証したいという思いが生じ、アウトカム臨床研究に興味を持ちました。
2004年には渡米してハーバード大学の教育病院であるBrigham and Women’s Hospitalのクリニカルフェローとなり、毎日心臓手術に明け暮れながらも、週末などに臨床研究論文を書いていました。そのうち臨床研究の方法論をしっかり学びたいと考え、2006年にハーバード公衆衛生大学院に入学し、臨床疫学や生物統計学、大規模データベース研究の方法論などを中心に学びました。この間多くの臨床論文を発表し、米国の心臓手術54万例のデータを解析したアウトカム研究論文も仕上げました。
その後、ニューヨークのコロンビア大学病院とベルギーのOLVクリニックで内視鏡下手術を含む低侵襲心臓手術を習得し、2009年より榊原記念病院、2013年より東京ベイ・浦安市川医療センターに勤務し、2019年までに3,000例以上の心臓・大血管手術を執刀してきました。2019年4月に虎の門病院循環器センター外科特任部長に就任しました。

研究分野
 私の臨床面でのメインワークとなっているのが非常に小さな創で行う内視鏡下心臓手術とカテーテル心臓弁膜症治療です。どちらも身体への負担が小さな治療ですが弱点があることも事実です。それに伴い研究面では、これらの低侵襲治療がどのような患者さんに向いておりどのような患者さんに向いていないか、どれほど患者さんの生活の質改善に役立っているか、医療コストなどの面で世の中にどれほど貢献できるかということを検証する臨床研究を主に行っています。
 そのほかには、退院後の術後合併症を早期発見するためのアプリや自ら特許を取得したカテーテル人工弁の開発にも携わっています。

今後の抱負
 臨床と研究の両方において、これまでにないものを生み出していくことを常に目指しています。
